category, but it struggled to shake the perception that it was a destination for only the most hard-core backcountry camper.&nbsp; With a goal to showcase that MEC has everything you could possibly need to go camping, we took the unconventional approach only showing the blank canvas of a bare front country campsite, inviting the viewer to use their imagination to complete the picture.&nbsp; Storytelling focused on sustainabilty attributes and fair trade practices under the umbrella concept that the line was ‘Made for future you’. The new / old logo’s first appearance on MEC branded gear was fittingly on a limited-edition release of retro inspired gear. Each piece of gear had a small tag with the words ‘Hello, old friend’ sewn into a hidden spot - a tag line we used for the relaunch of the logo. The previous two years leaned heavily on recreating moments from MEC’s past ‘catalogue’ years to make the heritage connection. For 2023 we invented a word - Retronatural - and dubbed our target audience the ‘young granola’, allowing us to add an esoteric bend to the campaign communications.&nbsp; From the concept statement: “Retronatural” piques interest, feels a bit dreamy, hints at the past while being rooted in nature.
